Scientific Games sees losses grow in 2018

first_img Regions: US Strong growth in revenue failed to offset the impact of growing costs for Scientific Games in 2018, with the gaming solutions provider’s loss for the period growing to $352.4m (£269.3m/€310.1m).Revenue for the 12 months ended December 31, 2018 was up 9.1% year-on-year, with a marginal decline in gaming revenue – down 0.7% to $1.8bn – offset by strong growth in the social and digital divisions.Social gaming revenue grew 14.9% to $415.9m, with digital revenue more than trebling to $269.6m, boosted by the acquisition of NYX Gaming Group, which was completed in January 2018. Lottery posted more modest growth, with revenue up 4.3% from 2017 to $846.3m.This growth in revenue was almost matched by significant growth in operating costs. Cost of services, which rose 21.2% to $505.6m, and restructuring-related costs of $253.4m – up from $45.9m in the prior year – saw particularly significant increases. The restructuring-related costs also included $151.5m, which was paid to Shuffle Tech to settle a long-running antitrust lawsuit in December 2018, and $27.5m in earn-out payments after Spicerack Media, acquired in 2017, performed better than expected over the year. This contributed to total operating costs for the year rising 15.1% to $3.1bn. Consolidated adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation increased 9% to $1.3bn.However operating profit for the year declined 32.4% to $265.6m. Once finance related costs, including interest expenses of $597.2m (down marginally year-on-year) and a $93.2m loss on debt financing transactions were factored in, Scientific Games posted a pre-tax loss of $339.3m. The company’s net loss for the year grew 45.4% to $352.4m.For for fourth quarter of 2018, Scientific Games posted revenue of $885.7m, up 7.6% year-on-year. The business was boosted by a $51.7m contribution from NYX in the period, which drove digital revenue from $17.8m in Q4 2017 to $71.5m, including $33.3m from sports betting and platform supply deals. The social division also enjoyed a strong quarter, with revenue rising 19.1% to $113.7m. Lottery revenue was also up in Q4 2018, at $230.7m.The core gaming division saw revenue decline, falling 4.7% to $469.8m. This, Scientific Games said, was due in part to new revenue recognition accounting implemented in 2018, which led to a $6.8m decline in gaming operations revenue. Machine sales, on the other hand, suffered in comparison to Q4 2017. The prior year included sales of 884 units for new opening and expansions, plus an additional 700 video lottery terminals being deployed in Canada. In Q4 2018, however, just 286 units were sold for new openings and expansions.Operating costs for the quarter fell, down 22.2% to $564.5m. This was largely due to a $183.1m reversal of the original penalty imposed on Scientific Games by an Illinois court in the Shuffle Tech case. Ultimately the settlement saw the company pay 45% of the court-imposed penalty.
Quarterly EBITDA was up 6% at $343.5m, driven by higher revenue and continuing operational efficiencies.Operating profit for Q4 grew from $321.2m, with the company posting a net profit of $206.8m for the period, up from a loss of $43.1m in 2017.Scientific Games chief executive Barry Cottle said it was a “very exciting time” for the business.“We’re focused on developing the best games and the most innovative platforms to deliver outstanding gaming experiences wherever and whenever players choose to play,” he explained. “We are building momentum and continuing to grow our business while at the same time operating more efficiently.“The entire organisation is enthused about 2019 and focused on helping our customers win, which will drive our free cash flow and create meaningful value for our shareholders.”The supplier’s finance chief Michael Quartieri added that the executive team saw opportunities to further drive top- and bottom-line growth in the year ahead, as it was committed to maximising are cash flow and drive down debt. This will be achieved in part through an initial public offering for a minority stake in its social gaming division, which filed an amended draft registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on February 14. Catena Media amends earn-out for BayBets acquisition

first_img Affiliate giant Catena Media has amended the terms of the second and final earn-out payment for its purchase of BayBets, the German sports betting affiliate it agreed to acquire in December 2017. This will see Catena take full control of the business earlier than expected, and for a lower price. 9th July 2019 | By contenteditor Catena Media amends earn-out for BayBets acquisition Tags: Online Gambling Affiliate giant Catena Media has amended the terms of the second and final earn-out payment for its purchase of BayBets, the German sports betting affiliate it agreed to acquire in December 2017.Catena has agreed to pay a fixed sum of €13m (£11.7m/$14.6m) for the final earn-out payment. This will be paid in three cash installments, by October 1 this year. The amendment means that the final sum paid to acquire BayBets will be lower than the initial agreement, with Catena also taking full control of the German assets earlier than expected.Under the original deal, Catena made an upfront payment of €26.5m for BayBets, which operates a network of 50 sports betting affiliate sites, primarily focused on the German market.Catena then made its first earn-out payment of €13.5m, of which 35% was paid in shares. In February this year, Catena issued 468,132 shares at a subscription price of SEK103.67 per share to make up this 35%.As a result of the amendment, and taking into account the earlier payments, the final total consideration for the BayBets acquisition is €53m, lower than the original maximum consideration of €63.5m.“By amending the final earn-out terms we are both obtaining full operational control at an earlier stage as well as lowering the final and total cost of the BayBets acquisition,” Catena chief executive Per Hellberg explained. “We are thereby avoiding further dilution as well as strengthening our balance sheet.” Finance Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Regions: Europe Central and Eastern Europe Germany Topics: Finance Sports betting Strategy Email Address AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterlast_img read more

ATG declares support for controversial Swedish deposit cap

first_img Topics: Casino & games Legal & compliance Tags: Online Gambling ATG declares support for controversial Swedish deposit cap 7th July 2020 | By Daniel O’Boyle Swedish former gambling monopoly Aktiebolaget Trav och Galopp (ATG) has voiced support for the country’s controversial online casino deposit limit following its implementation, though admitted that a loss limit would have been more effective. On 2 July, the SEK5,000 (£401/€459/$495) mandatory weekly deposit limit and a SEK100 cap on bonus offers came into effect, in order to limit player spending during the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.ATG sustainability manager Maria Guggenberger said social responsibility is a key priority for the operator, and that the limit would support its goal of keeping customers safe.“An important basic principle for ATG is that our customers are comfortable with thier gambling and that we comply with laws and regulations,” Guggenberger explained. “There should be no doubt that gaming responsibility is our most important sustainability issue and that we put it at the top of the agenda. However, while Guggenberger said that she is in support of the deposit limit, she added that loss limits would be more effective in protecting customers.“I feel confident that we have a high level of responsible gaming safeguards for our customers,” she said. “If we see behavior that suggests otherwise, we contact the customer – as the duty of care requires. “With that being said, it is my belief that a loss limit provides a better gambling liability than a deposit limit.”Guggenberger noted that ATG had already introduced a loss limit for its casino games in April before the deposit limit came into effect. This sees players select a maximum sum they can lose before they are allowed to place bets.“It helps the customer to control how much they want to lose in their gambling,” she explained. “It not only helps our customers but also us as a gaming company to see that the customers have healthy gaming habits.”Loss limits are being applied in other Scandinavian markets, such as in Finland by gambling monopoly Veikkaus. It had set a monthly loss limit of €2,000 for customers, with daily losses capped at €1,000, but reduced both to €500 during the Covid-19 pandemic. This temporary reduction came into force on 1 May, and will be in place until 30 September.Sweden’s mandatory deposit limit was first announced by Minister of Health and Social Affairs Ardalan Shekarabi in April. Although it was initially intended to apply to all forms of gambling, the rules were later changed to apply only to online casino, in part due to ATG raising concerns about the deposit limit being imposed across all verticals in a consultation.Operator association Branscheförenigen för Onlinespel (BOS) was quick to claim the revised controls would benefit operators in which the government held a stake – such as ATG – over private businesses. The limits have faced opposition from BOS and a variety of operators and suppliers in the Swedish market, with BOS launching a petition against the rule and suggesting alternative measures that its members said would be more effective. Gambling regulator Spelinspektionen also warned that the rules could benefit the unlicensed market and said implementation may prove difficult. Swedish former gambling monopoly Aktiebolaget Trav och Galopp (ATG) has voiced support for the country’s controversial online casino deposit limit following its implementation, though admitted that a loss limit would have been more effective. Prague City Council approves slot machine ban

first_imgRegulation AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter 15th September 2020 | By Aaron Noy Topics: Regulation Prague City Council approves slot machine ban Regions: Europe Czech Republic Prague City Council has voted to approve a decree banning all technical gambling games – including slot machines – in the Czech Republic’s capital city from 2024.The decree, which was last week also given the green light by lawmakers in the city, will prohibit mechanical, electromechanical and electronic games, including slot machines and video lottery terminals. However, operators will still be able to run casino venues that offer live gaming services within the 16 city districts across Prague that permit this form of legal gambling.“In Prague, we decided to follow the path of a blanket ban on slot machines throughout the city, because we set ourselves the goal of reducing the most dangerous forms of gambling, which include playing slot machines,” Prague councillor Hana Kordová Marvanová said.“Statistics show that limiting the availability of gambling has a significant positive impact in the area of negative social phenomena, such as pathological gambling or non-payment.”The new decree is the latest piece of legislation to be introduced with the aim of clamping down on problem gambling in Prague, and indeed the wider Czech market. In 2007, a decree set out the places and times where gambling is permitted in Prague, with 16 of the city’s 57 districts now allowed to offer legal gambling.Since this was introduced, the number of approved gambling locations in the city has plummeted from 1,422 to just 101 official casino establishments. The total number of gaming terminals also fell from 15,934 on 1 January 2010, to 3,995 as of 31 August this year. The Czech Republic’s Gambling Act was also adopted in 2016, setting out a series of new measures, including a ban on the advertising of gambling and new taxes on the industry.Outside of Prague, some cities have already implemented an outright ban on all forms of technical gambling, including in Brno, Ostrava, Břeclav, Kyjov, Klatovy and České Budějovice. In terms of how the new ban will impact revenue in Prague, Kordová Marvanová said prohibition is expected to result in a CZK400m (£13.8m/€15.0m/$17.8m) drop in annual tax income for the city.“We have promised all parts of the city that they do not have to worry about the loss of revenue from taxes on technical games, which they have so far used to finance public needs such as culture, education, sport or social affairs,” Kordová Marvanová said.“Therefore, together with the approval of the decree, the task of compensating the City Council for possible loss of income so that the financing needs of important public activities do not suffer was also approved.”Confirmation of the council’s approval for the new decree comes as the Czech Republic today (15 September) prepares to launch its new gambling exclusion register. The register, details of which will be unveiled later today, forms part of the wider effort in the country to tackle problem gambling and help protect vulnerable people from gambling-related harm. This will allow players to voluntarily self-exclude from all forms of gambling, as well as allow the authorities to place people on the register, such as those on welfare, those who are bankrupt, people who have received treatment for gambling addiction. Formula 1’s fastest ever lap was set at Monza – Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya’s 260.6km/h effort during practice for the 2004 Grand Prix – which should give you some idea of the nature of the track the locals call ‘La Pista Magica’. Cars are on full throttle for 80% of the lap, and hit their Vmax on the circuit’s 1.1km start/finish straight. From there, they roar off into the historic park section, where a series of big stops into tight chicanes give the brakes a good workout. Why go?The parkland setting of Monza, located just to the north east of Italy’s fashion capital Milan, makes for a relaxed, leafy setting for a Grand Prix, while the preserved Monza banking – spot it in the background as the cars exit the Parabolica, as well as on the flyover bridge they pass under en route to the Variante Ascari – leaves you in no doubt that you’re in the presence of a very special race track. With sports being resumed behind closed doors, Disney+ Hotstar VIP continues to bring LIVE sporting action to all Formula 1 aficionados.
