Island Park in Winfield has been destroyed by fire for 2nd time in over 4 years

first_imgby Shane Farley, Newscow.net — Island Park Playground in Winfield has been destroyed by fire for the second time in just over four years.Just after 10 p.m. Thursday, fire crews were called to the park for a report that the playground, which features a castle entryway, was on fire. The structure was engulfed in flames when crews arrived.Because of the intensity of the fire, it was allowed to burn. Fire personnel were on the scene to monitor the surrounding area. The playground was previously destroyed by an arson fire in Oct. 2008. Arsonists were convicted of starting the fire in 2009.When asked why firefighters had not engaged the blaze Winfield Fire Chief Alan Stoll replied “We don’t have enough water.”Stoll pointed out with the intensity of the blaze and the fact it was already “fully involved” firefighters could continue trucking in water, but there would be no point.“There’s nothing to save,” said Winfield City Manager Warren Porter who turned up at the scene quickly after authorities were alerted. When asked what would happen as a result of the devastating fire Porter replied, “I don’t know.”Porter did say the city does have insurance to cover damage to the structure.Crowds of onlookers were gathering in droves outside the boundary of Island Park, lining up along the dusty drive leading to an adjacent nature park and spilling onto a nearby walking bridge. Officers were stationed at all entrances in order to keep the crowds back from the blaze. After at least half an hour on the scene some efforts were made by firefighters to begin squelching the blaze. Report Reply +1 Vote up Vote down Wellington Resident · 386 weeks ago I hope they find who did this! There is a lot of memories that have been destroyed that will never be restored. People spent their hard earned money to support the park and make it beautiful. Then some joker comes along and thinks “oh wow this looks like fun to burn it to the ground”. Don’t be easy on who ever burned it this time. Make them pay.
