first_imgAs the body of 35-year-old Roopchand “Charles” Ramkellawan was laid to rest on Friday, the coastguard who is reportedly responsible for his death is expected to be arraigned at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Monday.Dead: Roopchand “Charles” RamkellawanAccording to information received, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack recommended that Lieutenant Eson Trim be charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.The file was returned to the Police late Friday afternoon by which time the Court was adjourned for the day.The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) coastguard is accused of killing Ramkellawan of Lot 4150 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) on Sunday evening along the De Willem Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).It was reported that the father of one was attempting to cross the roadway when he was struck by motor car PWW 5680, being driven by the 28-year-old gazetted officer of the Joint Services, who allegedly was speeding.Ramkellawan, who was knocked unconscious, was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.Meanwhile, the Police have claimed that an unlicensed pistol with four matching rounds was found in the late Ramkellawan’s possession.A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver, who hails from South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and it proved that he was over the legal limit of alcohol. He was arrested.A post-mortem performed on the body of Ramkellawan revealed that his death was caused by multiple injuries that were consistent with a vehicular accident.last_img
