Residents told to stay indoors as crews battle fire in St

UPDATEEmergency crews were called to a fire at an industrial building in St. Catharines around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Business and residents within 800 metres of 55 Oakdale Ave. were asked to close their windows and doors, stay indoors and turn off their heating and air conditioning due to the heavy smoke. Motorists and pedestrians were also told to avoid the area. Both advisories were lifted after firefighters managed to get the blaze under control around 1:30 p.m.“Today’s fire is another example of how an emergency can happen in a moment’s notice and why all residents need to be prepared,” said acting Fire Chief Jeff McCormick. “I encourage all residents to have a 72-emergency kit ready so they are prepared.”
