Gold, diamonds, and other precious metals and gems… they are found close to the surface of the earth where humans can mine them and make jewelry. But they shouldn’t be there. Heavy elements should have sunk deep into the core of the Earth soon after it was formed. Wait till you hear some of the latest ideas about how precious metals and gems arrived near the surface. Maybe they shot up from the mantle. Maybe they came from outer space. The fact is, geologists and planetary scientists don’t really understand why we have rare precious stones so accessible for man. PhysOrg printed an article entitled, “Tackling mysteries about carbon, possible oil formation and more deep inside Earth.” It’s about the Deep Carbon Observatory project destined to answer fundamental questions about the Earth’s interior. Inside you will learn about how diamonds the size of potatoes shoot up from the mantle at 40 miles per hour, believe it or not. However it happens, it’s convenient for miners, who otherwise would have to dig really, really deep holes to supply the wedding ring market. MSNBC posted an article about where gold comes from. “There’s gold in them thar meteorites!” the headline blazes. Jessica Marshall tells us, “Rocks pummeled Earth about 3.9 billion years ago, delivering precious metals.” Gold, platinum, iridium, nickel, and tungsten are attracted to iron and should have followed it into the molten Earth’s core, she explained. Meteorites to the rescue! They came from space. That’s right: “All the precious metals that we find today — and probably also water — have been introduced to the accessible Earth from these late-stage meteorites.” Maybe they even brought life! Figure that suggestion out after reading that the bombardment was probably “a terrible event for life” that “probably would have melted the planet, blown off any existing atmosphere.” Marshall used the new theory to bolster an old idea called the Late Heavy Bombardment. She reported a new study about tungsten isotope measurements to support the idea of a swarm of big meteors hitting Earth and the moon 3.8 and 4 billion years ago, but the obvious subtext is the ignorance of geologists about earth history. “Geologists have posed several theories to explain this puzzle,” she noted about precious metals. Careful reading shows the Late Heavy Bombardment to be only an idea, a suggestion. Interesting as isotope comparisons are, they don’t provide a time machine. And saying that the age of Earth’s tungsten matches the dates of craters on the moon calibrates two questionable dates against each other. Nothing in the article provides evidence that meteorites are made of gold. It seems to move the question of the origin of precious metals from one body to another. When all else fails, bring in a meteorite. When you can’t explain the moon, bring in a Mars-size meteorite to blast the Earth. When you can’t explain Earth’s oceans, imagine a giant water balloon comet to bring it special delivery. Meteor crashes are too convenient; they are the imaginary can openers that open any can for the hungry hobos. “Assume a can opener” makes the rest easy. Assume a meteor. Need water? Bring in a water meteor or comet. Need gold? Send in a gold meteor. Imaginary theory-saving devices to the rescue! 22 August 2013 South Africa’s third 24-hour news channel, Africa News Network 7 (ANN7), went live on DStv channel 405 on Wednesday. This follows the launch of the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC’s) own 24-hour news channel on DStv channel 404 earlier this month. DStv, Multichoice’s multi-channel African digital satellite service, also hosts etv’s eNCA, CNBC Africa and BDTV. ANN7, which is funded by the Infinity Media consortium, was launched by The New Age Media in Sandton. The new station, boasting a strong complement of 150 journalists, is headquartered at Midrand, Johannesburg. The channel’s presenters include former cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi, who will host a weekly talk show “Straight Talk”, and businesswoman Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon, who will host “Vuka Africa”. Kwaito artist Arthur Mafokate will host a weekly sport show called “Hola Weekend”. According to a media statement on the news channel’s website, it will focus on “constructive, nation-building stories in the interests of building a culture of unity and pride in South Africa”. ANN7 editor-in-chief Moegsien Williams told Business Day that the channel was ready “to bring the story as it happens with depth and perspective. “We want to bring a balanced discourse from all from all sides of the story, expose corruption and maladministration where we find it, and highlight stories that affect the ordinary man,” Williams said. The government has welcomed the channel as a boost for media diversity in South Africa. Phumla Williams, the acting CEO of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), said it would “contribute immensely to South Africa’s dynamic media industry,” providing a platform for further shaping public discourse on pertinent matters. Wish list1 – An efficient, affordable air-source heat pump that provides space heating, space cooling, and domestic hot water.2 – An air-to-water unit that makes 160°F water at outdoor temperatures of 0°F, to serve as a drop-in replacement for existing fossil-fuel boilers. For the last several years, just about every project I’ve worked on other than large university buildings has used minisplit heat pumps for heating and cooling. Why?1 – There is no combustion and no need for a chimney or vent.2 – In space conditioning applications, heat pumps can provide heating and cooling.3 – The equipment installation costs and the operating costs compare favorably with other options.4 – Heat pumps are a natural partner to solar electric systems to achieve zero-net-energy buildings.In addition, we’re using heat pumps to make domestic hot water (DHW) and even to heat swimming pools. All of these products are air-source heat pumps (ASHP) which extract heat from the air to supply heat to the load.We’ve been metering the energy consumption at a number of buildings using heat pumps. We’ve seen through our own experience, and through more precise lab-based measurement efforts such as those performed by NREL and others, that the Japanese minisplit heat pumps live up to their performance claims in terms of both output and efficiency. What I know (or I think I know…)(Caution: unfunded research follows.)1 – Compact superinsulated homes in climates with design temperatures of 0°F or more can often be heated with a single zone unit with the wall cassette located in the main space. As long as the doors to other rooms remain open, the temperatures in those rooms will usually be within 2°F of the space where the cassette is located. We’ve put electric radiant panels in bedrooms in these homes, and there’s a large variation in how much people use them; the variation seems to be driven mostly by whether the door is open.2 – Without specific detailed measurement of in situ Coefficient of Performance of the units (COP), the amount of energy used by these units, metered separately, agrees well with the usage predicted by simple energy models.3 – In temperatures below design temperatures, the units have enough capacity to heat the houses even though we don’t size them with an intentional safety factor. Recently it dropped to -5°F here on Martha’s Vineyard, and my Fujitsu ¾-ton ducted unit was heating my basement (because the air handler is in the basement, and I haven’t got the ducts installed yet) and one-story house, a total of over 2,400 gross square feet, to 70°F. The load had to have been more than the published output of the unit at that temperature (14,000 BTU/hour). I was impressed. The best single zone systems have little drop-off in capacity down to 5°F.4 – The cold climate Mitsubishi Hyperheats are rated down to -13°F and we’ve seen them running at temperatures below -20°F. Colleagues are reporting minisplits not specifically rated at these temperatures running happily at them nonetheless.5 – Treating these units like furnaces and implementing significant temperature setbacks doesn’t appear to save a lot of energy because they will run at full speed when the temperature is set back up, which is a less efficient operating point. And because they aren’t usually oversized for the house load, it can take a long time to get the house back up to temperature. At my house we regularly set down to 66°F overnight, or when we are both going to be gone all day at work, and set back up to 70°F when we’re there – unless the outdoor temperature is going to be in the teens or below, in which case we don’t set it back.6 – Properly designed and installed ducted systems are usually really quiet. However, I made the mistake on my new system of installing the air handler with a very short return – about three feet and one elbow to the return grille – and I’m going to have to do some sound absorption. The supply side is really quiet. Most of our ducted systems are hard to hear, most of the time.7 – The systems with high outputs at low temperatures are also delivering air at higher temperatures than traditional heat pumps, which is more comfortable. I’ve measured supply air at 120°F from my air handler this past month.8 – If the homeowners let the filters get dirty, output can drop dramatically! These aren’t your father’s 100,000 BTU/h gas furnace. The blowers have significantly lower static pressure capability than what most HVAC folks are used to. My air handler allows the external static pressure to be selected at the controller (not by the homeowner) and the maximum is 0.36 inches. So ducts may need to be larger than you think if the distances are significant or there are a lot of fittings.9 – In cooling, the fact that these systems are variable-speed and have such a wide range of operating points means that oversizing appears to have little consequence (usually in a heating climate, the heat pump size is determined by the heating load, so the cooling ends up oversized). Our clients here on humid Martha’s Vineyard have been very pleased with these units’ dehumidification performance.10 – Minisplits are not yet drop-in replacements for fossil-fuel furnaces and boilers in conventional housing, but we’ve been applying them selectively in cases where the existing system is due for replacement. Surprisingly, from a source energy point of view they reduce carbon emissions. On one project, a single oil boiler heated and provided hot water to two adjoining homes totaling 7,500 square feet. It was replaced by three Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pumps and two electric boilers (for severe weather – the Althermas hadn’t enough capacity, and more importantly, high enough temperature water at low outdoor temperatures). Annual electrical usage into the new system was just under 20,000 kWh. Oil consumption before the retrofit was 3,187 gallons/year, with associated CO2 emissions of 71,389 lbs/year. Using the EPA eGrid figure of 728 lbs CO2/MWh for the NEWE generation region, CO2 emissions dropped to 14,457 lbs/year, an 80% reduction. Fuel cost was reduced by 70%.11 – Ducted systems need well insulated ducts and they need to be airtight. My system has a design air flow of 353 cfm. Lose 100 cfm of that into the basement, and have ducts wrapped with bubble wrap, and half the output might not reach the living space. What we’d like to know more about1 – A consistent and understandable rating system for both capacity and efficiency. It’s frustrating to go to the AHRI Directory and find the heating rating at 17°F (the lower of the two rating temperatures) and then learn that the unit has a higher capacity at 5°F in the manufacturer’s engineering literature.2 – A good quick method for taking the HSPF and SEER ratings, assuming they can be made comparable and useful, and modifying them for different climates. I know how the machines we’re using in New England work, but I can’t tell you much about what to expect in substantially different climates.3 – A rating that includes how much power the system draws on standby, when the thermostat is satisfied. We’ve measured some surprisingly high wattage, and inquired of the manufacturer, to be told that we’re measuring improperly and that because of very low power factors the actual power draw is much lower. Ferdousi PriyabhashiniFreedom fighter and noted sculptor Ferdousi Priyabhashini passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday.She was 71.Priyabhashini was undergoing treatment at the coronary care unit (CCU) of Labaid Hospital following a cardiac arrest.She had been suffering from multiple complications, including kidney and heart diseases.Officials at the hospital said Priyabhashini was admitted to the hospital on 23 February. She was then suffering from kidney complications.Ferdousi Priyabhashini was born in Khulna on 19 February 1947. During Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971, she was tortured by the Pakistani military.For her sacrifice during the freedom fight, the government awarded her the Independence Award, the highest civilian award of the country in 2016.

Taylor Jr.The Delaware State University Division of Institutional Advancement recently hosted a number of regional HBCUs at its second annual Historically Black College and University Philanthropy Symposium on July 24-25 in the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center.The Symposium’s objective is to build a consortium of regional HBCU institutions to establish a process among the participating institutions in which philanthropic outreach solutions and best practices can be shared. Schools are thereby empowered to effectively address the challenges they face in fundraising. The consortium allows each institution to better leverage funding opportunity in an increasingly competitive market for philanthropy dollars.The keynote speaker this year was Johnny C. Kolkata: Displeased with the State Election Commission’s (SEC) decision to cancel its own order to extend the nomination process by a day, the Calcutta High Court today stayed the ongoing panchayat election process in West Bengal till further orders. Rejecting the SEC’s contention that the writ petition of the BJP was not maintainable, the court held that the SEC is endowed with powers relating to holding of elections, but in case of any digression, it needs to be corrected by the court of law. Also Read – Heavy rain hits traffic, flightsJustice Subrata Talukdar stayed till further orders the ongoing panchayat election process in West Bengal.Talukdar also sought from the SEC by Monday a comprehensive status report on the poll process, detailing the number of nominations filed and the percentage of those rejected, among other information.The court said it would hear on April 16 the pleas challenging the SEC’s decision to withdraw its April 9 notification, which had extended the date for filing nominations by a day. Justice Talukdar had on April 10 stayed the SEC order, permitting the commission to take steps in accordance with the law by treating the operation of its order dated April 10 to have been kept in abeyance.Referring to the Supreme Court order with regard to a petition by the West Bengal unit of the BJP challenging the SEC’s decision to recall the extension order, Justice Talukdar said that the operative part of the apex court order is crucially connected to the cancellation of the notification.The high court also said that the SEC should have informed it today that it has ensured a level playing field for all players.Justice Talukdar also expressed his displeasure at the conduct of the BJP representative, Pratap Banerjee, who had moved the petition on behalf of the party in view of an ongoing cease work by lawyers, for not disclosing that a similar petition had been moved by the party before the Supreme Court also.Justice Talukdar observed that this court must hold a very dim view of the conduct of the BJP representative appearing in person.”However, in view of public interest involved, this court is not vacating its directions to the SEC,” the judge said.Likening its conduct to forum hopping, Justice Talukdar imposed a cost of Rs 5 lakh on the BJP which would have to be deposited with the registrar general of the high court.Representing the Trinamool Congress, its vice-president Kalyan Banerjee earlier prayed for vacating the order on the SEC, alleging that the petitioner had suppressed that it had moved both the high court and the apex court with similar petitions.
