first_img.At least 50 Mehegani trees beside a road in Kushtia’s Daulatpur upazila were cut down allegedly by local Awami League (AL) leaders and activists recently without taking permission from the authorities concerned, reports UNB.Witnesses said a group of AL men numbering 10/12 people led by local leader Bazlur Rahman cut down the trees beside Kaimari road in the upazila in the night.Later, the trees amounting worth of Tk 500,000 were shifted to other places by local goods carrying hauler.Local AL leaders and activists – Bazlur Rahman, Ashraf Ali, Sirajul Islam, Fazlul Haqu, Riazul Haque, Jaony, Rony, Sumon – committed the crime by stealing the state owned trees in aegis of local MP Alhaz Rezaul Haque, alleged the locals.Being informed by the locals, police seized a total of 21 trees from the spot before being shifted to other places, said Shah Dara Khan, officer-in-charge of Doulatpur police station.However, no one could be detained from the spot, he added.Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Toufiqur Rahman said the seized woods were kept under the observation of VDP men of the union.Process to file a case in this connection was underway, said the UNO.last_img
